SMOU Celebrates SG60 – Honouring the Past, Embracing the Future

As Singapore marks its 60th birthday, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) commemorates this milestone in a heartfelt way—celebrating the nation’s journey through the lens of its people.

From nurturing young minds to honouring seniors and inspiring the next generation of seafarers, SMOU’s SG60 celebrations embodied the spirit of unity, gratitude, and care that defines Singapore’s progress.

Nurturing the Next Generation

The National Day spirit came alive on 8 August at My First Skool Jalan Sultan, where 142 cheerful children celebrated SG60 through fun-filled activities supported by SMOU.

Amidst red-and-white balloons and festive decorations, the little ones enjoyed traditional games like chapteh and five stones, posed for photos at a themed booth, and learned about sustainability by decorating their own reusable tote bags.

The celebration not only filled the centre with laughter but also reminded the young participants of the values of community and environmental care—planting early seeds of belonging and responsibility.

In the same spirit of appreciation, SMOU extended its SG60 celebrations to the seniors who shaped Singapore’s early years.

On 23 August, residents of NTUC Health Jurong West Nursing Home were treated to an afternoon of joy and companionship with young Tripartite Maritime Training Award (TMTA) cadets—many experiencing their first CSR activity.

Together, they played bingo, sang along to nostalgic tunes, and exchanged smiles that bridged generations.

Two days later, on 25 August, seniors from Henderson Home and NTUC Health Bukit Merah View Active Ageing Centre enjoyed an enriching excursion to the National Museum of Singapore. The “Once Upon a Tide” exhibition sparked fond memories as they reflected on Singapore’s maritime roots and progress.

The day concluded with a hearty buffet lunch at Lighthouse Bistro, where stories and laughter flowed freely—a fitting tribute to the seniors’ enduring spirit. The two most senior among the beneficiaries were recognised, while each senior received thoughtfully packed goodie bags, adding warmth to a day of celebration and remembrance.

A Celebration across Generations

SMOU’s SG60 celebrations highlighted the union’s commitment to both the future and the past—from children discovering the joy of community to seniors reminiscing on Singapore’s journey and young seafarers learning the value of giving back.

The meaningful engagements reaffirm SMOU’s commitment to caring for all generations, celebrating not just 60 years of nationhood but embracing the shared heritage in building the Singapore of tomorrow.
