Navigating the Future with Confidence at the SMOU Shanghai Officers’ Seminar

A strong current of purpose filled the Qiantan Ballroom at Shangri La Qiantan, Shanghai, as 450 SMOU members and maritime professionals gathered at the SMOU Shanghai Officers’ Seminar on 24 April 2026. The full day  programe  brought together  participants  from across the region, united by a shared commitment to staying ahead in an industry shaped by rapid technological and regulatory change. 

Participants arrived to a lively atmosphere, reconnecting with industry peers and forging new connections over light refreshments. In his opening remarks, SMOU President Rahim Jaffar set a purposeful tone, underscoring the need for officers to stay agile, uphold strong safety practices, and lead with clarity amid ongoing change across the maritime sector.

Adapting to a Changing Maritime Landscape

Kicking off the knowledge sessions, Mr TS Teo, President of the Singapore Shipping Association, offered a forward-looking perspective on artificial intelligence (AI) and its growing presence in maritime operations. In his talk, AI and the Future of Maritime Operations: What Seafarers Need to Know, Mr Teo highlighted how AI is reshaping processes onboard, from improving operational efficiency to enhancing safety oversight and decision-making. 

Following this, Mr Rayson Wong from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore addressed the responsibilities tied to sailing under a flag state. Raising the Bar at Sea: Flag Responsibilities, Compliance, and Officer Accountability, shed light on regulatory frameworks, compliance expectations and the accountability carried by officers onboard. 

He stressed that maintaining high standards is a collective effort. Compliance is not confined to policies, but demonstrated through daily actions, professional discipline and a shared commitment to safety. Participants actively engaged in discussion, seeking clarity on regulatory practices and how to navigate evolving requirements. 

Strengthening Support for Seafarers 

The seminar then turned to an equally important dimension of seafaring life: Mental well-being. Ms Li Jing from Shanghai Maritime Academy led an insightful session titled From Awareness to Action: Supporting Mental Health On Board, that explored the realities of isolation, stress, and long deployments faced by many at sea.  

Her approach took a practical, people-centred approach, equipping participants with tools to recognise early signs of mental strain and respond effectively. She emphasised that fostering a supportive onboard environment starts with open communication, empathy, and trust. Senior officers, in particular, play a vital role in shaping a culture where crew members feel seen, heard, and supported. 

Leading with Purpose  

Bringing the seminar to a strong close, Mr Justin Lim, Chief Officer from Pacific International Lines, delivered a grounded and relatable session on Leading at Sea: Building Trust, Communication, and Team Resilience. Through real-life experiences, he illustrated how leadership decisions directly impact safety, morale and team effectiveness. 

He spoke candidly about the dangers of blame culture and the pressures of hierarchy, encouraging officers to foster psychological safety onboard. When crew members feel safe to speak up, ask questions and report concerns, risks can be managed more effectively. His message was simple yet powerful. Leadership is demonstrated through actions, not titles. 

Moving Ahead Together 

As the day concluded, the seminar left participants with more than just new knowledge. It reinforced a shared responsibility to grow, adapt and support one another in an increasingly complex operating environment. 

The SMOU Shanghai Officers’ Seminar stood as a reminder that while the maritime industry continues to evolve, its strength remains rooted in its people. By investing in leadership, prioritising well-being and embracing continuous learning, seafarers are well positioned to navigate the future with confidence and purpose.
