A Day of Colours and Connection Across Generations

Generational divides melted away in shared laughter, music, and heartwarming connections during Care and Share Act 5: Uplifting the Community with U.

Organised as part of the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union’s (SMOU) 75th Anniversary Acts of Caring and Sharing initiative, the event welcomed young and old to Jalan Besar Community Club on 7 October 2026 to foster meaningful bonds through wellness, creativity, and community spirit.

The day brought together two special groups: 20 lively Kindergarten 2 children from My First Skool (MFS) Jalan Sultan and 40 smiling seniors residents from the Jalan Besar Active Ageing Centre (JBAAC). Standing alongside them, ready to lend a helping hand, were 10 dedicated SMOU volunteers.

The morning began with registration, quickly giving way to an energetic burst of wellness. Taking the front of the hall, the children and seniors joined fitness trainer Irene for a lively Zumba session. Side by side, young and old stretched, moved, and danced together, filling the room with infectious enthusiasm.

After working up an appetite, everyone settled at their designated tables for a well-deserved snack break before diving into a creative crafting session. In the lead-up to the event, several seniors and children had drawn maritime icons, which were brought together to create the designs on the tote bags. On the day itself, the children and seniors worked side by side, bringing these designs to life with colourful markers. The spirit of community shone through in these shared moments, as participants helped one another colour the bags and create something meaningful together.

The warmth continued as the MFS children took the stage to present a special dance performance, delighting the seniors with their cheerful routine. To capture the memories of the day, all participants, teachers, and volunteers gathered together for a commemorative group photo.

The celebration concluded with a generous distribution of meals and thoughtful gifts. The children were treated to delicious bento lunch sets and goodie bags packed with activity books and essentials, while the seniors received bento lunch sets and specially curated care bags filled with oat cookies, Milo, towels, and other daily necessities. MFS teachers and staff also enjoyed the bento lunch sets.

Thanks to the dedication of the 10 SMOU volunteers who stepped forward to spread cheer, Act 5 successfully created an inclusive, joyful environment, leaving both the young and the old with bright smiles and cherished memories.
