A Festive Reunion of Hearts: SMOU Celebrates Lunar New Year with Jalan Besar Seniors

The spirit of Lunar New Year was felt in its fullest measure as SMOU hosted a heartwarming celebration for 100 senior residents from Jalan Besar on 27 February 2026 at Lighthouse Bistro. Filled with laughter, lively traditions and meaningful interactions, the event was a joyful reminder that the true essence of the festive season lies in togetherness and care for one another.

From the moment the celebrations began, the atmosphere was electric. A vibrant Cai Qing lion dance weaved through the venue to the beat of resounding drums, drawing smiles, laughter and even a few delighted cheers from the seniors. The performance not only ushered in good fortune, but also sparked a sense of excitement that carried through the day.

Welcoming the guests, SMOU Vice-President Ms Siti Nellisa set a warm and inclusive tone, while Guest-of-Honour Ms Denise Phua, Mayor of Central Singapore District and Advisor to Kampong Glam Grassroots Organisations, shared heartfelt New Year wishes, reminding all present of the importance of community, compassion and connection—values that were clearly reflected throughout the event.

The celebration reached a joyful peak during the Lo Hei session. Gathered around tables, seniors, grassroots representatives, and SMOU officials—including President Mr Rahim Jaffar, General Secretary Ms Mary Liew, Treasurer Mr Yong Soon Huat, Membership Chair Mr Ismail Ahamad, Assistant General Secretary Mr Gwee Guo Duan, Secretary Mr Terence Tan, Assistant Treasurer Mr Tan Geh Ting and others—came together in the spirited tossing of yu sheng. With each enthusiastic shout of “Huat ah!”, the room filled with laughter and hope, as generations bonded over this cherished tradition.

Yet, beyond the festivities, it was the quiet, thoughtful gestures that truly defined the day. SMOU volunteers and officials moved from table to table, engaging seniors in conversation, offering assistance and ensuring everyone felt included and cared for. Their genuine warmth transformed the event into something more than a celebration—it became a space of friendship and belonging.

As dinner was served, the atmosphere remained light-hearted and cheerful. Volunteers continued to look after the seniors attentively, while familiar Lunar New Year tunes and interactive games brought about moments of nostalgia and joy. The personal presentation of hongbaos added another layer of festive cheer, with many seniors visibly touched by the gesture.

One of the most memorable moments came as 96-year-old Mdm Leow Guek Noi was specially honoured, drawing heartfelt applause from the room. It was a touching tribute that captured the respect and appreciation held for the senior community.

The celebration was a testament to SMOU’s strong spirit of volunteerism. Through simple acts of kindness—serving a meal, sharing a laugh, or offering a listening ear—volunteers and leaders alike created an experience that left a lasting impression on the seniors.

As the event came to a close, each guest left with not only festive goodie bags containing daily essentials and festive treats like Nestle cereal milk drink, rice, instant chocolate malt, chia seeds, love letter biscuits, mandarin oranges, bath towel and salonpas pain relief patch; but also cherished memories of a day filled with joy, care and companionship. More than just a festive gathering, it was a meaningful reunion—one that celebrated not only the Lunar New Year, but also the enduring bonds within the community.

Wishing all a joyful and prosperous Lunar New Year—Gong Xi Fa Cai!
