A Night of Camaraderie and Connection

Young Seafarers’ Get-Together 2025

Young SMOU (YSMOU) hosted the Young Seafarers’ Get-Together on 20 June 2025 at Lighthouse Bistro. The event brought close to 60 young seafarers and alumni of YSMOU together for an evening of meaningful connection and camaraderie, and celebration of the maritime journey. It was also a timely occasion to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer (DotS), which takes place on 25 June.

The evening began with a warm welcome and encouraging address from Sister Mary Liew, SMOU General Secretary, reaffirming SMOU’s continued commitment to supporting young seafarers and developing future maritime professionals.

As dinner was served, the youth shared stories and experiences, strengthening bonds and forming a close-knit community. The relaxed setting created an ideal space for interaction, with members actively engaging in conversations with each other.

During the get-together, experienced alumni and marine officers took the opportunity to share their seafaring journeys with the cadets who had just embarked on theirs. They offered practical tips on what to expect onboard, from adapting to life at sea and maintaining discipline to the importance of communication and being resilient. The officers also highlighted staying proactive in learning, and building strong relationships with the crew. Their stories not only offered guidance but also reassurance and encouragement to the younger seafarers as they prepare to navigate the challenges and rewards of a maritime career.

Adding a creative twist to the evening, a DIY marbling booth was set up, where the youth tried their hand at creating their own marbled artworks using traditional techniques and vibrant colours—offering a fun, hands-on break from routine.

The event concluded with the youth walking away with new connections, a sense of peer support, and a deeper sense of belonging within the youth maritime community.
