Baking Goodies, Sharing Smiles: A Heartwarming Year-End Celebration with Seniors

The festive spirit of giving and togetherness shone brightly as volunteers and seniors came together for a meaningful two-day celebration organized to spread joy during the holiday season. Held on 19 December 2024, the event brought smiles to seniors from NTUC Health Nursing Home Jurong West and NTUC Health Active Ageing Centre Jurong Central Plaza, creating cherished moments of warmth and connection.

Spreading Cheer Through Baking

The preparations began on 16 December at the Allspice Institute, where 36 volunteers gathered to learn the art of baking cranberry cookies under the guidance of  Pastry Chef Instructor, Chef Anup. In the spirit of giving, the volunteers worked together to bake over 1,500 Christmas cookies as a heartfelt gift for the seniors they would be celebrating with. The session was a chance for the volunteers to bond, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and embrace the joy of giving. The kitchen was filled with laughter, the aroma of cookies and a shared sense of purpose of bringing smiles to the seniors.

A Magical Outing at Gardens by the Bay

On 19 December, 40 seniors enjoyed a special Christmas outing at Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome. Welcomed by two SMOU volunteers who had also taken part in the baking session, they were treated to Swiss rolls, cakes, and tarts, setting a cozy tone for conversation before exploring the gardens. Inside, the seniors were captivated by the Christmas Train Show, featuring miniature trains weaving through iconic American landmarks, offering a unique Christmas tradition.

The visit also included a stop at the Monet Exhibition, where the seniors admired stunning artworks and learned about the history of Monet’s masterpieces. The combination of nature and art provided a meaningful experience, sparking curiosity and conversations among the group.

Ending the Celebration with Sweet Surprises

As the visit came to an end, the seniors made their way back to their respective centres, where a heartwarming surprise awaited them. They were greeted with Christmas cookies lovingly baked by the volunteers, rounding off the day with a sweet reminder of the kindness and generosity that had made the celebration so special.

Through shared experiences of baking, bonding, and exploring, Baking Goodies, Sharing Smiles was more than just a festive event—it was a celebration of friendship, appreciation, and the simple joys that make the holiday season truly magical.
