Because of You, We made a Difference!

SMOU has organised several care and share events in 2022 to give back to the community, and this would not have been possible without the help of close to 40 members who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer and bring smiles to the beneficiaries

To acknowledge and thank the volunteers for their contributions, Young SMOU (YSMOU) organised a Volunteers Appreciation Dinner on 28 December 2022. Held at Lighthouse Bistro, volunteers had the opportunity to network and catch up with one another whilst reminiscing on the memories they made when volunteering.

When SeaVoices caught up with some members, they were excited to share about the highlights of their volunteering moments, with some saying that it brought them joy to see how a simple gesture could put a smile on someone else’s face. Many also shared that they are pleased with what SMOU has planned for the beneficiaries and how the events were all well organised. During the dinner, a little token of appreciation was presented to volunteers by Sister Mary Liew, General Secretary of SMOU, to thank them for their commitment towards volunteerism.

“It was heart-warming to interact with the beneficiaries and I could see how appreciative they were through their smiles and I have always loved giving back to society whenever I can. I also got to meet fellow seafaring officers while volunteering my time to do something meaningful for society. I have enjoyed participating in the various volunteering events organised by the union in the past, and look forward to continue volunteering my time in future.”

“To be able to volunteer was a truly rewarding experience for myself, as I was able to put a smile on the beneficiaries’ faces. Being a member, I have received help and care from SMOU and I felt that it was only right to give back to the community whenever I can. The best takeaway was seeing the actual positive impact on the beneficiaries and I look forward to volunteering for more events in future.”

“The best takeaway from volunteering for me was the fulfilment and satisfaction from helping others and making a positive impact in the community. It was also an avenue for me to have the chance to meet new people and form meaningful connections. During my seafaring days, I experienced kindness, compassion and encouragement from people who volunteered their time at seafarer centres. This left a lasting impact on me, and I felt that I, too, should return the kindness that was shared with me, with others.”

A BIG THANK YOU to our volunteers for your time and unwavering support. Your dedication as a volunteer is an inspiration to others, that also leaves a smile on the faces of people we serve.
