British High Commissioner Visits WMI

Hoping to find like-minded people to share the skills development landscape with her, British High Commissioner (HC) Kara Owen visited Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) on 1 August.

Having just taken over the position to the Republic of Singapore in July 2019, she wanted to understand her new home by meeting the people, communities and organisations that are helping to shape it.

Led by NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), the entourage from the British High Commission visited WMI to learn about their state-of-the-art ship bridge simulator. There, WMI hosts Capt Menon and Senior Manager Wilfred Thiang introduced Her Excellency to the immersive experience of simulation technology that helps to train and prepare seafarers for their work at sea.

The visitors went through simulations of scenarios during a sea voyage. They experienced heavy storms, night simulation, and even aiding a nearby sinking ship during the tour. Capt Menon shared how the digitalisation of maps and nautical processes in the bridge simulator has assisted deck officers in their work.

Her Excellency felt that the simulator was realistic and commented on its details. She also experienced her first sea-sick experience on dry land! “I didn’t think I could get sea-sick on dry land…but I found out I could at the Wavelink Maritime Institute ship bridge simulator!”, she tweeted.

Her Excellency also had a change to steer the ship and take it a long the straits of Singapore, experiencing first had what a cadet might encounter during their education journey in the bridge simulator.

“At #NTUCe2i I saw how they support job seekers and those wanting to update skills to keep them relevant as jobs and work types evolve.”, tweeted HC Owen.

It was clear that both parties had an enjoyable exchange and experience in working towards future skills and building resilience in the workforce.
