In the spirit of lifelong learning, SMOU continues to prepare our senior members for the future of digitalisation by organising a series of workshops.

Mobile Photography and Shop & Pay Online Workshop

On 21 April 2021, more than 25 participants attended a full-day workshop on how to capture beautiful and lasting memories using smart phones and how to shop and pay online on shopping apps. The workshop was conducted under strict safe distancing measures and guidelines at Downtown East.

Participants brought their enthusiasm as they learned tips and tricks on how to capture and edit pictures on their mobile phones. “Through this lively hands-on session, I have acquired several useful tips and techniques to skillfully handle digital devices.  I can now confidently capture, edit and share perfect moments and stories on my smartphone.  I am also more assured and confident when I have to perform online purchases and transactions which have become part and parcel of the new normal,” said Joyce Tan Lian Tee, SMOU member of 28 years with her spouse, Goh Siow Yong, SMOU member of 39 years.

At the second half of the workshop, participants discovered how to use online shopping apps that allows them to search and purchase a variety of products ranging from food, clothes to even groceries. They were taught how to make use of online payment to complete their purchases safely, and how to make delivery arrangements for their items.

“The workshop is tailored to suit the learning pace of seniors like me, with a comprehensive step-by-step guide provided to us during the class. Thank you SMOU for organising a practical workshop that is useful for us in this day and age.” Jimmy Loh Hong Hoo, SMOU member of 29 years.

Maritime Cyber Security and Risk Awareness Workshop

Over at Wavelink Maritime Institute, on 30 April 2021, some 18 SMOU members got to understand more about Maritime Cyber Security and Risk Awareness. From the workshop, participants learned about the landscape of maritime cyber threats especially onboard the ship, and how to assess risks when conducting daily operations.

The workshops were enriching, and they inspired lifelong learning in participants by equipping them with new ways to create wonderful visual memories, confidence in online shopping and building shipboard resilience against cyber threats.
