On 22 December 2020, Young SMOU (YSMOU) in collaboration with Young NTUC’s U Heart, reached out to more than 150 beneficiaries from the Jalan Besar Community. Volunteers went door-to-door distributing goodie bags containing daily necessities and bento meals to senior residents.

The visit was graced by Mayor of Central Singapore District and Member of Parliament of Jalan Besar GRC Ms Denise Phua and joined by SMOU President Mr Rahim Jaffar, General Secretary Ms Mary Liew, officials from King George’s Avenue Senior Activity Centre and Kampong Glam CCC, as well as YSMOU volunteers.

Ms Denise Phua posted on her Facebook page, “Thank you SMOU for giving back and doing good for the Senior Residents for the longest time. Through these long term CSR work, it reaps trusting relationship and bonds with the elderlies.”

“Through this initiative, we hope it encourages more youth volunteers to come forward to do good for the community. In these difficult times of COVID-19, it is important to keep the vulnerable groups like the elderlies safe.” said Ms Mary Liew.

“It is heartening to see my fellow volunteers taking the time off from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives to give back to the elderlies. One memorable moment was having to see the smile on the senior residents faces, knowing that they are still remembered.” – Shanaz Bin Adbul Wahab, YSMOU Volunteer.

“From this volunteering experience, I saw how it brought so much joy to the elderlies living in the Jalan Besar. Thank you YSMOU for allowing me to participate in this meaningful project to give back to the community. Through this initiative, it has provided me with a different perspective and I look forward to more volunteering opportunities together with SMOU in the future!” – Augustine Tan, YSMOU Volunteer.
