Celebrating Day of the Seafarer with MTSS

In the months of June and July, SMOU embarked on a series of ship visits to distribute goodie bags to some 500 seafarers to commemorate the Day of the Seafarer. This was a collective effort between The Mission to Seafarers Singapore (MTSS) and SMOU, to celebrate seafarers who called at the Singapore port. The goodie bags contained items such as disposable masks, chocolate bars, and Salonpas muscle relief patches.

The goodie bags were a small gesture from SMOU, to thank seafarers and recognise their contribution towards the world in transporting essential goods – a reality which became apparent to societies around the globe during the pandemic.

Apart from the joint distribution with MTSS, SMOU also visited Singapore flagged vessel MV Kota Lambai to catch up with the crew on board and distribute goodie bags to them. SMOU Assistant Treasurer Mr Tan Geh Ting joined in on the ship visit to spread cheer and catch up with crew members on board. Meeting crew members provided them with an avenue to address any concerns that they might have, and provide the support they needed.

In light of this year’s theme, “Your Voyage – then and now, share your journey” aims to look at each seafarer’s voyages and how they have evolved over time. The campaign also gives seafarers an opportunity to share what resonates with them currently, whether it be crew change or the future of technology. Keeping the theme in mind, Young SMOU (YSMOU) had organised a dialogue session with SMOU’s Executive Committee members Mr Yong Soon Huat and Captain Nordin B Mohamed Rais, to share about their experiences at sea and opportunities available to them on shore.

SMOU wishes all seafarers a Happy Day of the Seafarer, and appreciate their tenacity of spirit for fighting the roughest seas and being on the front line during the unprecedented time.
