Celebrating Day of the Seafarer with Seafarers at Jurong Port

On 28 June 2024, amidst the bustling activity of Jurong Port, the maritime community came together to celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, a tribute to the hardworking seafarers who form the backbone of global shipping.

The Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) marked the occasion by joining seafarers at the Mission to Seafarers Singapore (MtSS) drop-in centre and aboard vessels docked at Jurong Port. Over 50 seafarers gathered at the MtSS drop-in centre, where they were treated to an evening of relaxation and camaraderie.

SMOU Executive Committee members – Ismail Bin Ahamad, Sofwan Bin Marzuki, Haji Nahrawi Bin Omar, Tan Hung Tat, Tay Chin Joo; and MtSS Chairman Capt Frederick Francis were seen engaging with seafarers in conversations and shared stories, and even joined them in some recreational activities.

A delectable spread of food such as chicken rice, fried chicken, and a variety of local kuehs and fruits offered much ‘fuel’ for their hard work. Besides the feast, each seafarer was presented with a DotS goodie bag containing a travel adapter, thermos flask, and some snacks. The thoughtful gift put a smile on their faces.

SMOU and MtSS Officials also visited the vessels that were docked at the port – bulk carrier VIMC Mighty and vehicles carrier Arc Honor, bearing gifts of food and goodie bags to the crew members who could not make it to the DotS celebration at the MtSS drop-in centre. The gesture of goodwill to the crew members were greatly appreciated and welcomed.

SMOU remains steadfast in honouring seafarers for their tireless efforts in driving international trade and powering the global economy. Their commitment and resilience are commendable, making every Day of the Seafarer a reminder of their indispensable role.
