Celebrating Excellence: SMOU Bursary, Scholarship, and Wavelink Book Award Presentation 2024

On 28th September 2024, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) held its Bursary, Scholarship, and Wavelink Book Award Presentation at e2i, with around 100 recipients, their families, and guests from the shipping industry in attendance. This annual event celebrates and supports the academic achievements of SMOU members’ children, encouraging them to pursue their educational dreams.

SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew, along with Brother Gwee Guo Duan, Exco Committee members and SMOU officials, warmly welcomed Guest of Honour Sister Yeo Wan Ling, NTUC Assistant Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

In her speech, Sister Wan Ling emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation, highlighting the resilience of students amid challenges such as the recent pandemic. She remarked, The awards we present today go beyond academic success—they represent our young minds, their hard work, dreams, and aspirations. She also encouraged the awardees to continue their journey of learning.

Brother Gwee also praised the perseverance of recipients, sharing an inspiring success story of a student who has consistently excelled with the help of SMOU’s support. He further reminded the recipients of the importance of lifelong learning: Learning is not just an academic pursuit—it is a lifelong journey that will continually shape and enrich your life.

A total of 37 awards were presented, including bursaries, scholarships, and Wavelink Book Awards. A special token of appreciation, a painting titled “Growing in the Night” by Zayden from Shaping Hearts, was also given to Sister Wan Ling.

The ceremony concluded with a touching video where recipients expressed gratitude to their parents, followed by a group photo with SMOU officials and the Guest of Honour. At the end of the ceremony, families and shipping company guests were led in batches to tour and experience the newly upgraded Wavelink Maritime Simulation Centre.   The day was filled with refreshments and engaging activities, including the SkillsFuture Interactive Booth and exciting drone flying experience, creating a memorable celebration of community spirit.
