The MTSS Jurong Drop-in Centre came alive with warmth and camaraderie on 30 June 2025, as close to 80 seafarers from eight vessels gathered to mark the Day of the Seafarer. Organised by the Mission to Seafarers Singapore (MTSS) and supported by SMOU and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the evening was a heartfelt tribute to those who dedicate their lives to the sea.

The event opened with words of appreciation from Captain Frederick Francis, Chairman of MTSS, and SMOU Treasurer Yong Soon Huat. Mr Yong took the opportunity to highlight the essential role seafarers play in keeping global trade flowing, acknowledging their resilience and sacrifices.

The evening also included a timely sharing by Mr Chafekar, Executive Director of ReCAAP, who spoke about piracy and sea robbery incidents in Asia. Seafarers were briefed on practical safety measures and ways to reduce risks while navigating high-risk areas.

After the session, the atmosphere shifted to one of ease and connection. Seafarers mingled over dinner, exchanged stories, and enjoyed a well-deserved break from their demanding routines. Complimentary massage sessions offered a chance to relax, while StarHub showed their support with free SIM cards for all present.

SMOU officials Ms Siti Ainul Nellisa, Mr Gwee Guo Duan, Mr Yong Soon Huat and Mr Ismail Bin Ahamad joined MPA representatives Ms Wan Fei Fei, Mr Sasa Wong and Captain Zheng Yi  in distributing goodie bags packed with thoughtful treats and essentials. From chocolate chip cookies and travel adapters to local snacks and DOTS cards, the gesture brought smiles to many faces.

The evening wrapped up with satisfied smiles and a strong sense of appreciation. More than just a celebration, the gathering reminded all present of the importance of community and the value of acknowledging those who often work far from home, out of sight but never out of mind.
