Across the one-day seminar, the morning session on Shipboard Mental Health & Well-being was delivered by WMI’s Dr. Priscilla Leong, who provided the officers with an insight into managing the mental and emotional stresses encountered with working and living at sea, along with how to manage and overcome them. While the afternoon session was separated into professional practices for Deck Officers and Marine Engineers, where participants were offered programmes that were relevant to their scope of work.
The Professional Practice for Deck Officers was delivered by Guest Speaker Capt. Lee Wai Pong, who shared his vast experience as both a former Master Mariner and also an active professional Arbitrator, Adjudicator, Mediator and Business Advisor. His session on commercial shipping covered the legal principles of contract law, charter parties, Bills of lading, and P&I insurance, offering the Officers a very good overview and understanding of how their roles on board commercial ships contribute towards the wider role of commercial shipping being the most economical and efficient way of commercial transportation globally.
The Professional Practise for Marine Engineers was delivered by Guest Speaker Mr Fabian Chew, who shared his experiences as a former Chief Engineer, Superintendent Engineer, and consultant on the aspects of ship engine performances and drain oil analysis, creating a powerful engine conditioning monitoring tool adopted by engine manufacturers. He shared with the Marine Engineers the intricacies of understanding and monitoring low sulphur fuel and engine performances, understanding the combustion characteristics of the fuel, optimising fuel and engine performances, and the issues and challenges arising from operating ship engines with low-sulfur fuel.
The seminar was very well received, with further discussions taking place during and after the session.
