Industry-Wide Effort In Building A Pipeline of Singaporean Talent For The Maritime Sector

Singapore’s maritime industry is a dynamic sector and the industry continues to groom promising individuals to be future leaders – ready to pave the way ahead in the maritime field.

This year, more than S$1.1 million worth of scholarship funds were awarded to 46 students – highest number of awardees since the establishment of the MaritimeONE Scholarships. In addition, a total of 14 TMSS scholarships valued at about $1 million were also awarded this year.

Aligned with SMOU’s belief in investing in future maritime leaders, the union has offered the MaritimeONE scholarship to a propitious scholar, pursuing a diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) – Singapore Polytechnic, Nicholas Chio Yao Wen.

Humbled and grateful for the scholarship, Chio said “Seafaring has always been a life-long dream of mine and my biggest goal has always been to one day become a ship captain. Words cannot describe how thankful I am for this opportunity presented to me. This scholarship will be a reminder for me that I have a goal that I want to reach and no matter how tough it gets, I know that I will do my very best and continuously push myself to greater heights. Thank you for providing me with such an opportunity.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s award ceremony was pre-recorded, with Mr Niam Chiang Meng, Chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore thanking all of the sponsors and expressing positive sentiments regarding the growth of the maritime industry.

“Do not be afraid to explore the opportunities that come your way, seek out new horizons and most importantly, keep an open mind and learn,” he encouraged the awardees.

Congratulations to all deserving scholars!
