Celebrating National Day with the SMOU Family

  • Post published:14 September 2021

SMOU commemorates its 70th Anniversary year in 2021 and continued the annual tradition of celebrating National Day with members and their family. Whilst keeping safe, a fully virtual event was organised for members to join in on the celebration in the comfort of their own homes. With food ranging from Nasi Lemak to Durians delivered to their doorstep, many members and their families tuned into the event over a delicious dinner spread from all around Singapore.

SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew opened the event by greeting members and their families. In the spirit of SMOU’s milestone year, she thanked members for their longstanding support and acknowledged that it is ‘Because Of You’, our members, that SMOU has been able to achieve what we have till date. She encouraged those who are eligible and have not gone for their vaccination to take it up, so that Singapore can be in a more resilient position beyond the pandemic. She also expressed appreciation for seafarers who are still out at sea, saying “our hearts go out to them”. Ms Mary Liew also stressed on the importance of mental wellness, and encouraged members to look out for each other especially seafarers who continue to work on board ships during the pandemic. She invited those who are struggling mentally to come forward to receive help, reassuring that SMOU will always be here for them.

It was a jolly event with emcee, Fei Fei, hosting trivia games and lucky draws. Live band ‘Merry Bees’ ended off the programme with national day songs that added to the spirit of the event. Families were seen enjoying their Mao Shan Wang and D24 durians, while others were seen singing along and waving their Singapore flags through their screens.

It was an eventful evening for all members and participants. Despite the celebration being online, the presence and participation of members were the ingredients that made the event a success!

SMOU and members would like to take this opportunity to wish Singapore a Happy 56th National Day. Let us continue to stay safe and healthy for a stronger Singapore.

“The event was fantastic, my family enjoyed the games and the lucky draw. We also enjoyed the good dinner and Mao Shan Wang durian. Happy Birthday SMOU!”
