Modern shipping involves cross-border global operations and many seafarers can attest that the shipboard environment can be culturally enriching, having sailed with ship officers and crew from diverse nationalities.
Working and living together onboard for many months can sound exciting at the very beginning. However, it takes good effort and appreciation of other cultures to foster a harmonious environment during the entire deployment onboard.
Some 25 Ship Officers and Maritime Professionals enrolled for Wavelink Maritime Institute’s (WMI) inaugural programme titled ‘Cross-Cultural Communication in a Shipboard Environment’ on 11 August 2021. Participants attending the session were representing the SMOU CBA Companies of Laurel Shipmanagement, Pacific International Lines, PACC Ship Managers and POSH Fleet Services.
Led by Mr Muhammad Hisham Bin Amir, and developed by WMI for the maritime industry, participants were taken through a programme that covered cross-cultural awareness, managing of cross-cultural differences or incidents and understanding the relationships between culture’s effects on elements of human behavior both professionally and personally.
Participants were also offered insight into methodologies of team dynamics and promoting efficient team-oriented working mindsets that are sensitive to cultural differences.
