The COVID-19 pandemic which began in 2020 affected the everyday lives of people all around the world, but within that storm, many individuals from different industries and sectors stepped forward to make their contribution towards the betterment of Singapore and society.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced that about 9,500 individuals will receive the National Awards (COVID-19), for their contribution towards the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. This include some 4,000 from the public healthcare sector, 4,500 from the public sector, and about 900 from the private and people sectors.
Amongst the awardees are Maritime tripartite partners – Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) President Sister Caroline Yang with The Public Service Star (COVID-19); NTUC President and SMOU General Secretary Sister Mary with The Public Service Star (COVID-19); Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Assistant Chief Executive (Operations) Captain Muhammad Segar Abdullah with The Public Administration Medal (Gold) (COVID-19); and Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS) President Kam Soon Huat with The Public Service Medal (COVID-19).
Tripartite partner representatives were conferred the awards for their important contributions and service to Singapore in the maritime sector in Singapore’s collective fight against the pandemic. Tripartite collaboration enabled the continued operation of the global supply chain, while creating the possibility of safe crew change and vaccination in Singapore, as well as financial and job support for seafarers who were negatively impacted by the situation.
The accomplishments of tripartite collaboration during the pandemic is the sign of commitment and strength to support maritime workers even through the toughest of times. Charting a new way forward into the future, SMOU will leverage on these key partnerships to do more and value-add to seafarers.
