MaritimeSG Care Awards 2023

In 2023 when most of daily life has returned to a familiar pre-pandemic normal, the COVID-19 pandemic and its woes can seem like a lifetime away. The challenges and solutions developed during the pandemic were however no trivial matter, and to accord recognition to those that have contributed to the combined efforts of the industry, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) awards to partners.

On 1 March 2023, SMOU General Secretary Sister Mary Liew and Assistant General Secretary Mr Gwee Guo Duan, along with representatives from other partner organisations were invited to the MaritimeSG Care Awards 2023 event to remember and recognise the important support given to the Maritime industry across the pandemic.

Representing the unions, Sister Mary gave a short speech highlighting the importance of Singapore’s tripartism and what partners managed to achieve from this collaborative force. “I believe that as long as we continue working hand-in-hand, we will be able to face any obstacles and emerge stronger, just as we have from the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said with a weight of confidence in her voice. She also acknowledged and thanked those that SMOU has worked closely with during the pandemic. This included Senior Minister of State for Transport Mr Chee Hong Tat, former Chief Executive of MPA Sister Quah Ley Hoon, President of Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) Sister Caroline Yang, Executive Director of SSA Brother Michael Phoon, Senior Director at the Ministry of Transport Mr Bernard Lim, staff from MPA, and the Labour Movement team.

Minister for Transport S Iswaran, presented the MaritimeSG Care Awards (COVID-19 Resilience) to Sister Mary who received the award on behalf of SMOU for their “unwavering dedication and partnership with MPA and the maritime sector in the fight against COVID-19.”

We would like to congratulate all the other 53 recipient organisations on the award, and their invaluable contribution across the pandemic.

As the maritime industry sails beyond the extraordinary events of the pandemic, Singapore’s ‘tried and true’ tripartism will bring us ahead through any storms or crises.
