What does the future of shipping look like? For 15 Young SMOU (YSMOU) members, that question came to life during a learning visit to A*STAR Centre for Maritime Digitalisation (A*STAR C4MD) on 12 September 2025.
Welcomed by A*STAR C4MD’s Director, Dr Qin Zheng, and guided by Senior Manager, Mr Jason Lin, the youths explored how technology is revolutionising the maritime industry. From artificial intelligence and simulation tools to data-driven decision-making, they saw how innovation is driving Singapore’s vision for smart and sustainable shipping.
The research leads Dr Xiao Zhe and Dr Wang Ke from the Maritime AI Research Programme led by A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (A*STAR IHPC) provided a live demonstration of automated near-miss case detection that used to be manually reported by operators at the end of their watch.
This capability would serve as the foundation to allow AI to predict potential collisions before they occur by factoring in tides, weather, and operational aspects in the near future. This system also supports the Vessel Traffic Information Services (VTIS) by providing timely updates to vessels at sea, reinforcing safety.
The youths also discovered how tugboat fuel optimisation software helps reduce costs and emissions while minimising environmental impact. They learned that fuel efficiency isn’t always about slowing down—it’s also about maintaining a certain speed.
By the end of the learning visit, the young seafarers walked away inspired by how digital innovations aren’t just reshaping maritime operations but also creating a safer, greener environment that supports Singapore’s vision of becoming a global hub for smart and sustainable shipping.
That same evening, 22 young seafarers gathered at NTUC One Marina Boulevard for the second run of Human Library Conversation, where stories replaced textbooks and wisdom flowed from lived experience.
Four maritime professionals/former seafarers—Capt Dorothy Sim (Marine Safety Investigator), Capt Hisyam Haron (Master Mariner Consultant), Mr Kong Yong Sheng (Fleet Technical Manager), and Mr Tan Heng Shoon (Fleet Superintendent)—opened up about their journeys from ship to shore. In huddle groups, they shared the ups, downs, and turning points that shaped their careers.
Capt. Dorothy encouraged the youths to pursue their Class 1 Certificate of Competency (CoC), describing it as “a gateway that opens more doors” for career advancement both at sea and ashore. Her message underscored the importance of continuous learning and striving for higher qualifications.
Echoing that spirit of growth, Capt. Hisyam reminded participants not to settle into comfort zones. “Don’t get too comfortable with your role—take on the tough tasks,” he advised, adding that the shore-based maritime environment is dynamic and constantly evolving.
Mr Kong stressed the value of soft skills such as having a positive attitude, sincerity, and logical thinking. He encouraged young seafarers to always give back to the maritime community, regardless of where they are in their journey.
Mr Tan shared practical tips for career development, emphasising the importance of good interview skills, well-tailored CVs, and clarity in career goals. He also highlighted the need for confidence and preparation when engaging in professional conversations.
The recurring message was clear: learning never stops. Whether at sea or ashore, every challenge helps a seafarer grow stronger and more ready for what’s next. The session left the youths not only motivated but also reassured that even after achieving CoC Class 1, the maritime world holds endless possibilities beyond the ship for those who dare to take the leap.
