Across 5 – 8 September 2022, SMOU held their 70th Anniversary Mega Trip on board the newly arrived Royal Caribbean Spectrum of the Seas cruise ship.
With the extension of the 70th Anniversary celebrations into 2022, the Mega Trip was also hosted at an appropriate time as SMOU’s first overseas trip since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. The relaxed measures and restrictions on social activities allowed members to enjoy and properly commemorate the happy occasion together. On 5th September 2022, more than 220 SMOU members packed their bags to set sail for the oceans for the next 4 days.
Opening the Mega Trip and welcoming members was SMOU Treasurer Mr Yong Soon Huat. He noted that it was surreal to be able to gather physically in such a big group after the long period of the pandemic.
He thanked members for their support over the years saying that “this trip, along with the rest of our 70th Anniversary celebrations, are to recognise and thank you for your support.” He affirmed members that SMOU “celebrates our 70th mark Because of You, and will chart our future together with you into the decades beyond.”
Members took part in activities around the ship, enjoying the food and facilities with family and friends.
On the second day, over 50 members and their families woke up early to participate in a scavenger hunt to find photo spots around the 16 decks of the ship. Prizes were up for grabs for members that could snap photos of the most clues in the shortest amount of time!
On the second day the cruise docked at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, where members took to the streets to explore Penang island. Some explored with their mouths by going on a food and shopping tour, while others with their cameras, visiting heritage sites such as the Peranakan Mansion and significant Chinese clanhouses. The tours ended at a food court that offered a variety of local fare, finishing off the land tours by filling the tummy with a delicious dinner.
Because of You, SMOU continues to host our anniversary celebrations which will culminate at the 70th Anniversary Gala Dinner happening on 22 October. See you there!
