Since time immemorial, seniors have been the main beneficiaries of SMOU’s Lunar New Year festive celebration. It is a yearly affair to invite the elders from senior homes to participate in SMOU’s Annual Lunar New Year Luncheon and Hong Bao Presentation event to come together to celebrate and enjoy the new year festivities.
However, with the ongoing COVID-19 safe management measures, SMOU was not able to host the luncheon in 2022. Instead, SMOU took it in their stride and went the extra mile to bring the festive celebration to seniors at the Henderson Home, greeting them with packed bento sets, care packs, oranges and Hong Baos.
As prudence had to be exercised when visiting the seniors in order to ensure the safety of both the elderly residents and the volunteers themselves, officials and volunteers were separated into smaller groups when delivering the care packages to the seniors.
Visiting the Henderson Home seniors were SMOU officials – General Secretary Ms Mary Liew, Emeritus General Secretary Mr Thomas Tay, Immediate Past President and Chairman of Henderson Home Advisory Council Captain Robin Foo, Assistant General Secretary Mr Larry Gwee, and Young SMOU Chairman Mr Dominic Yong. Joining in the distribution were also NTUC Health officials – Head of Senior Cluster Network Ms Jeannie Ho, Senior Manager Mr Allan Ho, and Centre Supervisor Ms Liz Chew.
More than 40 senior residents received the care packs and meals at their doorstep. Cheery welcomes and bright smiles of the residents were seen along the corridors as SMOU volunteers handed out the food and care packs to the seniors to celebrate the auspicious occasion while they were in the safety of their homes.
In addition, SMOU also prepared festive goodies to be distributed to 30 seniors of NTUC Health Henderson Shelter Home and 40 seniors at the Day Care Centre. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, these goodies were handed out to the seniors by the staff instead.
“I am very excited for SMOU and NTUC Health to come and visit us this year because when they came to visit us for Lunar New Year last year, we really enjoyed the visit! Thank you to SMOU, NTUC Health and all the volunteers for being so warm-hearted and for coming over to gift us these food and care bags,” said Mr Yap.
“This outreach by SMOU and NTUC Health is very good and it makes me feel very happy that there are people coming to visit me during this period. I am grateful to SMOU and NTUC Health for dropping in on us and for providing us with a whole bag of daily necessities so that we can use it,” said Mdm Lee.
“Thank you SMOU and NTUC Health for being so caring – coming down to interact and chat with us so that we will not feel lonely. I am also very heartened to receive the delicious lunch and care packs. The Hong Paos are a happy bonus!” said Mdm Leong.
With the COVID-19 restrictions and visitations disallowed, SMOU arranged for Lunar New Year festive bento sets and Chinese goodies to be delivered to 130 seniors of NTUC Health (Jurong West) Nursing Home on the 4th of February. The staff were also treated to bird nest drinks to thank them for their hard work during this time.
Separately on the 7th of February, Young SMOU Chairman Mr Dominic Yong headed down to Jamiyah Home for the Aged with gifts for 120 seniors. Due to safety precautions, Head of the home, Mr Mohamad Zaidi received the Hong Baos, festive goodies and bento sets on behalf of residents.
As the festive giving event came to a close, SMOU is happy to have brought joy and warmth to the residents from the various senior homes during this Lunar New Year season and are looking forward to doing more and better for both seniors and the community at large.
