SMOU Celebrates World Maritime Day and World Mental Health Day with Seafarers and Healthcare Workers

In honor of World Maritime Day and World Mental Health Day, SMOU reached out to the maritime and healthcare communities with heartfelt support and appreciation.

From 25 September to 10 October 2024, SMOU visited ships at the PSA Port Terminal, engaging over 100 seafarers. During these visits, we distributed goodie bags filled with snacks and wellness items like water bottles and travel adaptors, each accompanied by a personal message of encouragement to show our appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

During the ship visits, SMOU officials had meaningful discussions with the second and third officers on welfare and wellbeing matters. SMOU shared resources through which seafarers could connect with when requiring help. There was an opportunity for a tour of the vessel, where union officials could visit the ship’s amenities and working environment. Overall, SMOU officials were pleased to see safety posters everywhere and ample relaxing spaces and clean living and working environment.

We also extended our support to healthcare workers by visiting nursing homes, where we provided complimentary massages to over 360 NTUC healthcare workers, helping them unwind and promote mental well-being.

These efforts reflect SMOU’s ongoing commitment to supporting the well-being of both seafarers and healthcare professionals, ensuring that everyone receives the care and recognition they deserve.
