SMOU hosted its Chennai Nite in conjunction with Wavelink CadetsPlus graduation at the Hyatt Regency on 21 June 2024. More than 300 members, graduates from the CadetsPlus Programme, distinguished guests from the shipping companies, Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET), Maritime Union of India (MUI), National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), and SMOU officials turned up for the grand celebration.
The Chennai Nite & Wavelink CadetsPlus Graduation featured fringe activities that included a 360-degree revolving camera to capture omnidirectional views against a 3D SMOU display photowall, show-stopping performances by the cadets, games, song performances, and a lucky draw.
Kicking off the event was an electrifying dance performance by X1X Crew, who set the stage ablaze with their mesmerising acts that shot them to fame in India’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent.
An inspiring opening address was delivered by Guest-of-Honour Mr Rahim Bin Jaffar, SMOU President, followed by a rousing speech by Capt. Tushar Pradhan, MUI General Secretary, congratulating the graduates from the Wavelink CadetsPlus Programme.
With the theme for this year’s Day of the Seafarer (25 June) centered around safety, Mr Rahim Bin Jaffar highlighted the importance of creating a safer maritime workplace. He pointed out in his speech, “The Day of the Seafarer serves as a timely reminder to prioritise safety measures at sea. Here at the SMOU, we actively encourage seafarers to share their best safety practices, from essential gear to crucial training they receive. By fostering open communication and knowledge exchange, we can collectively create a safer working environment for all seafarers.”
A video montage showcasing the recently concluded Wavelink CadetsPlus programme, stirred up emotions of camaraderie as the cadets looked back at the incredible journey throughout the intensive three-week programme.
There was boisterous cheering when it was time to honour the 100 cadet graduates from the CadetsPlus Programme. Mr Gwee Guo Duan, Assistant General Secretary of SMOU, presented three special awards to cadets voted as the Most Outstanding, Best Leadership, and Best Academic. Representing the voices of CadetsPlus graduates, Most Outstanding Cadet, Mr Kushwaha Siddharth from Pacific International Lines paid tribute to the collective efforts of the CadetsPlus team.
As the dinner banquet was served, guests were seen engaging in conversations and networking.
The programme highlights that members look forward to are performances from the CadetsPlus graduates. And so when it was time for them to shine, cadets crooned, displayed beatboxing skills, and performed a hip-hop dance routine. So much talent on display. Following the cadets’ performances, there was live band music.
The Chennai Nite progressed from one high point to another, culminating in the lucky draw segment. Thanks to shipping companies that had sponsored the lucky draw prizes, there were 30 attractive prizes up for grabs—the top prize being an iPhone 15. The lucky draw segment became an entertaining and interactive affair when Mr Sunil Nair, NUSI Assistant General Secretary, and Capt. Tushar Pradham, MUI General Secretary, went onstage to distribute the Seafarers’ Lucky Draw (Top 10) prizes. With their entertaining personalities, both presenters roused up excitement among the guests.
As the celebration drew to a close, the maritime community took home special memories of Chennai Nite and the assurance of the union’s support. We are family!
