SMOU Engages Special Limit Cadets at SMA

On 10 July 2024, Young SMOU (YSMOU) connected with cadets from the Special Limit (Deck Officer) programme at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) through an insightful union awareness talk.

YSMOU Chairman Brother Dominic highlighted the vital role SMOU plays in seafarers’ employment, welfare, and development. He emphasised how the union supports its members at every stage of their careers, offering a powerful collective voice in negotiations over wages, benefits, workplace health and safety, job training, grievance resolution, and more.

“A collective voice is more powerful than a single voice,” he stated, underscoring the importance of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Real-world case studies were shared, illustrating how SMOU successfully advocated for members in cases of unfair termination, unpaid wages, workplace injuries, and unfavourable contract terms. The union’s intervention consistently secured justice and protected members’ rights.

Beyond safeguarding employment rights, SMOU also cares for its members’ welfare, families, and education through various benefits and social activities. YSMOU’s initiatives further aim to nurture the youth with development workshops, volunteer projects, and other engaging activities.

The union awareness talk offered the cadets valuable insights into SMOU and reinforced the union’s commitment to supporting its members.
