As restrictions eased last year, SMOU took the time to visit shipping companies to strengthen relationships and have conversations about the future of the Maritime Industry, and its workforce. From July to August, SMOU paid visits to 16 shipping companies. Conversations were held with companies to find out more about their areas of concern as well as some trends affecting companies.
With the everchanging maritime industry, the conversations also revolved around the future of shipping, and how the workforce can evolve to attain the skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow. A better understanding of the company’s current areas of focus also ensures that the union continue to stay relevant and better position itself to support the maritime community.
Conversation topics include ESG, where the” Environment” pillar constitutes a fundamental and key development area for the Maritime Industry. Unions and companies discussed how shipping companies can invest in the training of seafarers, for them to undergo more courses both onboard and ashore so as to ensure effective ESG monitoring and reporting.
Decarbonisation and Digitalisation (D&D) was a natural segue topic from ESG, with the Singapore port terminals adopting cleaner energy, automation and digitalisation in its transition towards a low-carbon future while keeping local ports competitive. Decarbonisation was also a well-positioned topic of discussion with MPA’s net-zero emission goals by 2050.
Finally, as Singapore progresses, the Singapore Core has been a collaborative effort between tripartite partners since 2015. Discussions saw ideas on how to boost the Singapore Core by attracting talent and retaining maritime talent within the industry in order to further growth of the maritime industry.
SMOU looks forward to conducting more of these on-the-ground visits to shipping companies in the future so as to keep to date with industry happenings and strengthen the bonds with shipping partners, ultimately working to better the maritime industry for all.
