On 23 December 2024, the MtSS Drop-in Centre at Jurong Port was filled with warmth and laughter as about 50 seafarers gathered for a year-end celebration. Organised by SMOU in collaboration with MPA and MtSS, the event was a heartfelt tribute to seafarers for their dedication in keeping global trade moving. Despite heavy rain preventing ship visits, the spirit of appreciation and camaraderie remained strong throughout the evening.
The event featured Christmas-themed festivities, a delicious feast, and exciting lucky draw prizes. Seafarers arriving from four vessels—HC Melina, Devbulk Servet, AAL Hong Kong, and Ile De Re—were welcomed with goodie bags filled with snacks and useful gifts such as travel adaptors.
During the evening, speeches were delivered by Mr. Lim Siew Cheng (MtSS Management Council Member), Mr. Darrick Leow (Acting Senior Deputy Director, Shipping, MPA), and Mr. Dominic Yong (YSMOU Chairman). They acknowledged the seafarers’ hard work in 2024, recognising the sacrifices they made while at sea and expressing gratitude for their resilience. Their words of encouragement set the tone for a meaningful celebration, reinforcing the maritime community’s commitment to supporting seafarers.
No celebration is complete without great food and this one had plenty. Seafarers enjoyed traditional dishes like turkey, chicken ham and mini log cakes, along with additional treats sponsored by MPA. As they dined, seafarers reconnected with old friends and enjoyed casual games of pool and darts in a relaxed atmosphere.
The highlight of the evening was the lucky draw, where five lucky seafarers won prizes such as blood pressure monitors, power banks, and Oasis water bottles. Those who did not win the top prizes still received a small gift, ensuring that everyone left with something to remember the evening by.
The event was a simple yet meaningful way to honour seafarers, bringing warmth and festive cheer to those who spend long months away from home. Through thoughtful gestures and heartfelt conversations, the maritime community showed its continued commitment to supporting seafarers—not just during the festive season, but all year round.
