Spreading the Lunar New Year Joy to Senior Members

During this festive Lunar New Year (LNY) season, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) made a special effort to reach out to senior members who were unable to attend the annual LNY Luncheon due to age, health, or mobility challenges.

Determined to bring joy to all, SMOU extended their festive cheer to 16 senior members, aged between 72 and 86 years, through home visits.

With warmth and gratitude, SMOU officials—Ms Mary Liew, General Secretary; Mr Rahim, President; Mr Thomas Tay, Emeritus General Secretary; Ms Siti Ainul Nellisa Mohamad, Vice President; Mr Gwee Guo Duan, Assistant General Secretary; Mr Mohd Farhan Mohd Fadillah, Assistant General Secretary; Mr Yong Soon Huat, Treasurer; Mr Terence Tan, Secretary; and Mr Dominic Yong, YSMOU Chairman—visited the homes of these senior members between 31 January and 14 February 2025.

As a token of appreciation, each senior member received a festive gift package consisting of a lohei set, a $50 hongbao, essence of chicken, and a special New Year goodie bag filled with mandarin oranges, mint coins, and red packets—symbols of prosperity, togetherness, and good fortune for the year ahead.

Among the recipients were two of the union’s most senior members, Mr Leo Boon Fui and Mr Wong Keng Hock, both 86 years old, who have collectively dedicated 87 years to SMOU. Another distinguished member, Mr Lee Jee Heng, aged 85, has been part of the union for an impressive 50 years.

The LNY home visits to senior members reflects the core values of SMOU—caring and sharing—as the union continues to promote inclusiveness and foster a strong sense of community among its members.
