Wavelink CadetsPlus Philippines Graduates Certified Sea-Worthy

They made it!

A new chapter began for 114 Filipino cadets as they graduated from the Wavelink CadetsPlus Philippines programme, marking the successful completion of an intensive three-week pre-boarding training programme designed to prepare them for life at sea.

Held on 22 May 2026 at Conrad Manila, the graduation ceremony brought together shipping employers, industry partners, union leaders, and members of the maritime community to celebrate the cadets’ achievements and send them off on the next stage of their journey.

The ceremony opened with remarks by cadet emcees, who expressed their appreciation to industry partners and employers for their support in shaping their training and maritime careers. In his opening address, SMOU President Mr Rahim Jaffar underscored the significance of the CadetsPlus programme in preparing cadets for their seafaring careers. He also urged graduates to continue learning and pursue excellence as they embark on their professional journeys.

Guest-of-Honour Teo Teng Seng, President of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), offered a powerful reminder that the real journey lies ahead.

“Graduation is not a finish line,” he said. “It is a starting point.”

One by one, the cadets stepped onto the stage to receive their graduation certificates from SMOU General Secretary, Mary Liew, and Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI), Managing Director, Teo Keong Kok. Each name was met with warm applause, reflecting the significance of the moment for the graduates and their peers.

A fireside chat with Rayson Wong, Deputy Director of the Singapore Ship Registry at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), gave graduates a glimpse into the industry’s evolving landscape. Through an engaging discussion and Q&A session, he encouraged them to seize the opportunities ahead.

In appreciation of their contributions, Mr Thomas Tay, Emeritus General Secretary and Wavelink Co-operative  Chairman, presented tokens to Mr Rayson Wong and Mr Teo Teng Seng.

The ceremony concluded with a group photo of graduates alongside distinguished guests, before transitioning into a cocktail reception and the SMOU Manila Nite and Wavelink CadetsPlus celebration, featuring entertainment, food, and prizes.

For many, the day marked not just a graduation, but the beginning of a meaningful voyage at sea.
