Youths Exploring the Singapore Strait

Young mariners immersed themselves into Singapore’s vibrant maritime landscape at the Young Mariners’ Networking event on 8 May 2024. Organised by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Young SMOU (YSMOU), this event was held at Marina South Pier and Singapore Maritime Gallery, attracting around 100 participants from Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central, Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) and YSMOU members.

The event kicked-off with a Sea Exploration Tour, led by experienced guides. The participants navigated the waters of the Singapore Strait, allowing them to gain insights into the intricate workings of one of the world’s busiest waterways. The guide also explained how the western side of Singapore is dominated by tankers and different zones are compartmentalised for bunkering and containers.

Participants learned to identify various types of vessels, decipher the significance of ship colours, and understand the navigation aids guiding vessels through the waters. The three-hour boat trip around Marina South Pier allowed participants to explore Singapore’s beautiful waterfront and nearby islands known for their lush landscapes and cultural heritage, showcasing the city’s maritime charm.

Following the Sea Exploration Tour, attendees convened at the Singapore Maritime Gallery for the sharing session and networking.

“Don’t give up, work hard and play hard.”

4th Engineer Arjun Selambram gave an inspiring account of his seafaring journey, emphasising the invaluable support provided by the union. He shared how he benefitted from being an SMOU member, through the social and welfare benefits, as well as programmes planned for members, such as networking events and self-development workshops.

“A union that cares for its members”

Young SMOU Chairman, Dominic Yong brought greater union awareness, as he talked about the union’s commitment to protect seafarers’ welfare and the strong tripartism in Singapore, working together with MPA and shipping companies, to provide support for the seafarers. One of the initiatives birthed from tripartism, together with MPA and other government bodies is the Sail Milestone Achievement Programme (SailMAP).

“Every single skill that you learn equips you for your future.”

Nina Liang, Manager (Education & Training) from the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) provided insights into seafaring careers and subsequent shore career options, encouraging students to pursue their passions and acquire essential skills for success in the maritime industry.

The sharing sessions concluded with an engaging Q&A segment. Students eagerly posed questions to SMOU member, Capt Hisyam, on topics relating to career progression timeline and industry expectations. This was followed by a networking dinner, where students had the opportunity to interact with seafarers as well as representatives from MPA and SMOU and delve deeper into seafaring-related queries.

The Young Mariners’ Networking: Sea Exploration Tour was an enlightening and enriching experience. It fosters learning, networking, and a deeper appreciation for Singapore’s maritime heritage, inspiring the young mariners to embark on their own maritime journey.

The world is your oyster.

“I found the tour engaging. It was helpful to learn about different types of ships, buoys, and islands, which can aid us while sailing. I have yet to decide on my future career path, but I’m eager to explore options beyond sailing. Though it may be a while before I make a decision, I want to be prepared and be aware of the available alternatives.”

– Erica, SMA, Diploma in Nautical Studies

“Being on board a ferry for the first time was an interesting experience for me. Exploring

various boat systems, including tankers, was enlightening. By speaking to someone in the cadet wing, it provided valuable insights into the maritime industry. It is also crucial to understand the role of union for my future in the seafaring industry, as it offers protection and support.”

– Muhammad Azam, ITE College Central, Marine Engineering

Today’s tour was enlightening and eye-opening as I was able to explore Singapore waters and see the islands. The rare opportunity where students got to experience the sea conditions first-hand allowed them to gain valuable insight into the industry. While some may be inspired to pursue a career at sea, others may realise it’s not for them. Either way, it helps them make informed decisions.”
