As technology reshapes workplaces and the maritime sector prepares for a more digital and sustainable future, one thing remains constant: the importance of strong partnerships between workers, employers and the government.
That message was at the heart of the Company Union Rapport Exercise (C.U.R.E.) Forum held aboard Genting Dream on 16 March 2026, where maritime leaders and tripartite partners came together to reflect on Singapore’s journey and discuss the challenges that lie ahead.
The forum marked a significant milestone for C.U.R.E., which has spent the past 45 years fostering dialogue and trust across the maritime community. A commemorative video tracing its history served as a reminder that many of the industry’s achievements today were built on decades of collaboration and shared purpose.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr Desmond Tan, Deputy Secretary-General of NTUC and Senior Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted how tripartism has been a cornerstone of Singapore’s success. As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence continue to transform jobs and businesses, he emphasised the need to ensure workers are equipped with the skills and support needed to adapt confidently to change.
The conversation continued during a panel discussion featuring representatives from across the maritime ecosystem, including government agencies, unions and industry leaders. While perspectives varied, a common theme emerged: the maritime sector’s future challenges cannot be tackled in isolation.
From digitalisation and decarbonisation to evolving workforce expectations, panellists spoke about the importance of maintaining open dialogue and strengthening cooperation across the industry. Several reflected on how Singapore’s labour-management relations have evolved over the years, transforming from a period of industrial tensions into a model of trust and partnership that is recognised internationally today.
The discussions were particularly relevant at a time when the maritime sector is undergoing significant transformation. New technologies are changing the nature of work, the transition to greener shipping is accelerating, and businesses are navigating an increasingly complex global environment. Amid these shifts, participants agreed that the principles that have guided Singapore for decades, trust, mutual respect and collaboration, remain as relevant as ever.
As the forum concluded, it was clear that while the maritime landscape will continue to evolve, the industry’s ability to move forward together will remain one of its greatest strengths.
