It was an evening to celebrate resilience, commitment and dedication. A time to recognise the dedication of long-serving members and to mark the completion of TETA cadets in their CoC preparatory programme.
For the first time, the SMOU Long Membership Awards was celebrated with Wavelink Marine Engineering COC 5 Preparatory Programme Graduation. The event, held at Paradox Merchant Court Hotel on 28 November 2023, saw the attendance of 130 members, cadets and their family.
SMOU President Mr Rahim Jaffar kickstarted the event, urging members and friends to continue a culture of honouring one another.
While members and guests proceeded to enjoy their dinner buffet spread, the banquet hall was filled with songs from the 60s to 90s by Romito & Band. The dinner programme encouraged engagement among the family of SMOU.
Mr Teo Keong Kok, Managing Director of Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) shared about his own career journey. His address was followed by the Marine Engineering CoC 5 Preparatory Programme Graduation. On that evening, 7 cadets stepped up to receive their certificates from Thomas Tay, Chairman of WMI. The graduates felt honoured and humbled to be able to complete their training amidst the challenges of the pandemic.
Next up was the presentation of the SMOU Long Membership Awards recipients.
This year, 205 members were recognised for achieving 10, 20, 30, 40, 45 and 50 years long membership with SMOU. Recipients in each of the category came up on stage to receive their award by SMOU officials. Special recognition was given to our General Secretary, Sister Mary Liew, for demonstrating outstanding commitment and dedication to the union for 40 years. Achieving an impressive 50 years of membership were Brother Rohhani B Hayri and Brother Sofwan.

During the presentations, members and guests were seen cheering one another. The revelry continued well into the night with more entertaining songs by Romito & Band.
Congratulations to graduates and long membership awardees.
