SMOU marches on in fulfilling its commitment of carrying out 7 Acts of Caring and Sharing in its 70th Anniversary year. On 22 November 2021, the union organised the “Act 6: SMOU Care for the Home” to give back to the seniors at the NTUC Health (Jurong West) Nursing Home. Assistant General Secretary, Gwee Guo Duan, along with Young SMOU (YSMOU) Chairman, Dominic Yong and other YSMOU representatives headed over, to send cheers to the seniors through the gifting of care packs and other beneficial items.
Due to the on-going pandemic, in order to keep the seniors safe, the items were presented outside of the Nursing Home, and Ms Chong Wai Fung, the centre director of NTUC Health (Jurong West) Nursing Home, received them on behalf of the seniors.
The care packs were filled with daily essentials like hygiene and welfare items that will come in handy in ensuring the safety and health of these seniors during this period.
The YSMOU team also prepared a number of the seniors favourite snacks, that can be redeemed by the seniors through the Nursing Home’s Mama Shop – an initiative by the Nursing Home for seniors to exchange snacks or items with the Earn and Shop tokens earned through the activities they do.
Aside from care packs and snacks, the union also donated fun recreational items like Do-It-Yourself (DIY) craft kits and board games to the nursing home so that seniors can engage in the various interesting activities with one another in the home.
Seniors were also in for a treat as the union arranged for lunch bento boxes delivered to the nursing home. The bento boxes featured local fare like satay and sweet and sour prawns, which was a delight for the seniors. Not forgetting the staff of NTUC Health (Jurong West) Nursing Home, who have worked tirelessly around the clock to care for the seniors during this trying time, lunch bento sets were also prepared, in appreciation of their contribution.
“We are grateful to SMOU for supporting our seniors and staff throughout this challenging time. We look forward to the continued partnership with SMOU, and are excited to kickstart more physical engagements when it is safe to do so,” said Ms Chong.
As SMOU completes the 6th Act of its Care and Share initiative, the union is glad to have touched the lives of yet another group of seniors. Next, the union will continue to embark on its last of its 7 Acts.
