The vibrant beats of drums, gongs, and cymbals accompanied by the energetic movements of a traditional lion dance set the stage for SMOU and Wavelink’s Lunar New Year Luncheon and Hong Bao Presentation.
Held on 3 February at the Raffles City Convention Centre, the annual celebration gathered over 1,150 SMOU senior members, tripartite partners, and members of the maritime community for a joyous reunion.
Guest-of-Honour NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng followed up with his address, underscoring the significance of the TMTA programme, a collaboration between SMOU, MPA, NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute), SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), and various shipping companies.
“As the maritime sector navigates global uncertainties and increasing environmental regulations, tripartism remains essential for resilience and transformation,” he stated.
“SMOU has remained steadfast in supporting seafarers’ well-being and skills development, ensuring a strong Singaporean core in the workforce. NTUC and our unions will continue to equip workers, including our seafarers, with the necessary training, resources, and tools to excel in their careers.”
Following the inspiring speeches, the celebration continued with the traditional Lo Hei, as guests enthusiastically tossed yu sheng while cheering, “Huat ah!” to welcome prosperity and success. The ballroom buzzed with laughter, lively conversations, and joyful networking.
As a delectable lunch was served, attendees enjoyed a heartwarming performance by children from My First Skool at Jalan Sultan Centre. Staying true to its core values of caring and sharing, SMOU spread the spirit of joy and togetherness by presenting hongbaos to its senior members and senior citizens from Henderson Home. This year, nearly $30,000 was distributed, with the presentation led by the Guest-of-Honour, SMOU VIPs, and SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew, accompanied by God of Fortune mascots, further elevating the festive mood.
The entertainment lineup featured a vibrant cultural showcase by Peranakan Sayang, followed by an engaging game segment where guests actively participated. The grand finale was an electrifying performance by Suzie Wong & 4 Dancers.
As the event came to a close, guests departed in high spirits, having reconnected, enjoyed fun activities, and embraced the shared aspirations of health, happiness, and prosperity for the new year.
