Generative AI Essentials: Empowering Members with AI Confidence

SMOU’s Generative AI Essentials Workshop | 4, 11 & 18 October 2025 | ITE College Central

Generative AI has become one of the most talked-about technologies of our time — reshaping how we work, learn and create. To help members better understand and use this powerful tool responsibly, SMOU organised the Generative AI Essentials Workshop by Institute of Technical Education held across three Saturdays in October.

A total of 56 members attended the workshop, guided by trainers Estebelle Khong and Charmaine Mong, who led participants through an engaging mix of discussion, demonstration, and hands-on learning.

Exploring the Promise and Pitfalls of AI

The workshops began with participants sharing what drew them to the session. Some wanted to understand the potential risks of AI, while others were simply curious about this technology that’s shaping the modern world.

Trainer Estebelle kicked-off the morning session with an introduction to the fundamentals of Generative AI — what it is, how it works, and how it’s already influencing everyday life. From facial recognition and digital assistants to travel planning and entertainment, AI is everywhere.

Application of Creative AI Software

In the afternoon, trainer Charmaine led participants into the creative side of AI. Members experimented with different tools and modalities — from text-to-image and text-to-speech to AI-generated videos — learning how to craft effective prompts and evaluate AI-generated content responsibly.

The hands-on practice helped demystify AI, showing participants how to use it meaningfully in their work, hobbies, and even communication. Charmaine reminded everyone that while AI can be a valuable assistant, users must stay alert for privacy, accuracy, and ethical concerns.

Staying Human in an AI World

By the end of each session, participants walked away with both practical knowledge and a renewed sense of responsibility. Many said the workshop helped them stay current with digital trends and gave them tools to share their knowledge with younger colleagues and family members.

Despite the excitement around AI’s potential, one message resonated strongly across all sessions — technology should empower, not replace human judgment. As one participant put it: “AI can assist, but it should never rule us.”
