Over the past year, seafarers and maritime frontline workers have played a crucial role in maintaining the global supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic. Showing appreciation for these key workers, the Maritime Port and Authority of Singapore (MPA) worked with the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) and Jurong Port to commission a local artist to produce two 4-meter by 2-meter wall mural art displays at the PSA Pasir Panjang Terminal and Jurong Port.
On 7 April, SMOU General Secretary Ms Mary Liew was invited to the Pasir Panjang Terminal to paint the finishing details of the mural. The murals feature workers of the maritime industry at work, with a message that reads:
This mural is dedicated to all our seafarers and frontline maritime personnel for their commitment to keeping the Singapore port open during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, the continued function of the Singapore Port was also made possible because of swift collaboration by tripartite partners to maintain safe operations at the port. Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Transport, Mr Chee Hong Tat, commended maritime tripartite partners in a Facebook post, saying, “MaritimeSG has remained resilient despite the difficult environment last year, an achievement possible only with the strong tripartite partnership we have in Singapore.”
While the maritime industry continues to journey on the road to recovery, we honour the sacrifices of our seafarers and key maritime workers while pressing on with tripartite initiatives to accelerate crew change for our seafarers in the region and beyond.
