Celebrating SMOU’s 75th Anniversary with Our Members

March was a particularly meaningful month for SMOU as the union marked its 75th birthday. On 20 March 2026, more than 100 members gathered at the Mariners’ Lounge to celebrate this special occasion, turning the space into a lively and heartwarming reunion filled with laughter, gratitude, and togetherness.

The atmosphere was livened up as members arrived to a welcoming spread of sweet and savoury treats, and quickly settled into cheerful conversations with familiar faces. Old friends reconnected, new friendships were formed, and the venue buzzed with laughter and camaraderie. Thoughtful touches such as complimentary massage services added to the festive mood, giving members a chance to relax and rejuvenate, and a customized water bottle bearing member’s name added a unique touch, creating mementos to remember SMOU’s milestone year.

Opening the celebration, SMOU General Secretary Mary Liew thanked members for being part of SMOU’s 75-year journey, highlighting the strong sense of unity and support that has shaped the union over the decades. She also gave a special nod to members celebrating their birthdays in March, making the occasion more personal and heartfelt.

The highlight of the afternoon came with the presentation of a beautifully arranged birthday cake, accompanied by cupcakes spelling out “HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY SMOU”. Joined by Emeritus General Secretary Thomas Tay and the Executive Committee members, Sister Mary led everyone in a joyful birthday song before inviting the March-born members to take part in the cake-cutting ceremony—a moment that captured the spirit of togetherness.

As the event drew to a close, members left with joyful hearts, strengthened friendships, and cherished memories. The celebration reflected SMOU’s enduring spirit of family and belonging.
