Chennai Nite 2025: A Night of Maritime Bonds and Cadet Achievements

The atmosphere at Hyatt Regency Chennai on 13 June 2025 was filled with warmth, laughter, and a strong sense of togetherness, as more than 330 guests came together for the SMOU Chennai Nite and Wavelink CadetsPlus Graduation.

The lively cocktail reception brought old friends and new acquaintances together, with plenty of smiles exchanged at the photo wall and conversations sparked over shared memories and stories.

Inside the ballroom, the celebration took on deeper meaning. SMOU President Rahim Jaffar, joined by union officials Yong Soon Huat, Gwee Guo Duan, and Ismail Ahamad, welcomed the crowd with sincere appreciation. A high-energy performance by Bomb Fire Crew added extra spark to the festivities.

President Rahim’s opening remarks were filled with gratitude for the maritime family’s continued support. A surprise moment came when Capt Tushar Pradhan from the Maritime Union of India presented him with a token of appreciation, a gesture that highlighted the strong ties between unions across borders.

The spotlight soon turned to the CadetsPlus graduates. As Yong Soon Huat presented the CadetsPlus Awards,

The Best Academic Award goes to Milan Jude Dominic from Fleet Ship Management, the Most Outstanding Cadet Award is presented to Zachery John Dsouza from CMA Ships, the audience applauded the accomplishments of the young cadets. A heartfelt speech by the Best Cadet captured the room’s attention, followed by a touching musical performance and a group photo to remember the moment.

Adding fun and laughter to the evening, guests took part in a treasure hunt that brought friendly competition to the ballroom. The Seafarers’ Draw kept spirits high as prizes were handed out by SMOU leaders and guest Mr Sunil Nair, who was surprised with a birthday cake from his team.

As the night drew to a close, Capt Tushar presented the top CadetsPlus Draw prizes before guests enjoyed a buffet dinner accompanied by live music. Conversations continued well into the evening as guests reflected on the shared experiences and the strong bonds forged through the maritime journey.

SMOU Chennai Nite 2025 was not just a celebration, it was a gathering of a community that continues to stand united, as it grows stronger with each passing year.
