It’s the time of year senior residents of Jalan Besar look forward to.
The SMOU Lunar New Year Celebration with Jalan Besar Senior Residents on 16 February 2024 was met with much joyful noise and merriment, as some 100 seniors celebrated Lunar New Year of the dragon at the Lighthouse Bistro. What made it extra special is that it’s the seventh day, which marked the People’s Birthday.
The event kickstarted with a Cai Qing “picking the greens” lion dance performance to usher fortune, wealth and prosperity in the Lunar New Year. This was followed by a welcome speech by YSMOU Chairman Mr Dominic Yong and an opening address by our Guest-of-Honour Ms Denise Phua, MP for Jalan Besar GRC (Kampong Glam) and Mayor, Central Singapore District.
Then, “huat” happened next was the Jalan Besar community went in for Lo hei (Cantonese for ‘tossing up’). Shouts of huat ah resounded in Lighthouse Bistro as senior residents, officials from the Kampong Glam Constituency Office, GOH and SMOU officials exchanged well wishes while tossing yu sheng.
The seniors and guests were treated to a sumptuous seven-course dinner served by cheerful staff from Lighthouse Bistro and SMOU volunteers.

Ms Denise Phua and SMOU President Mr Rahim Jaffar, accompanied by SMOU Treasurer Mr Yong Soon Huat, YSMOU Chairman Mr Dominic Yong and JBAAC Centre manager, Ms Polly Lim went table to table to personally present hongbaos and blessings to every senior.

While enjoying their dinner, guests were entertained with games such as quizzes, LNY trivia and there was a contest for who could hold the “LONGest Breath”.
A special moment came for the oldest senior citizen, 102-year-old Mdm Teo Ah Moi, who was presented with a LNY goodie bag.
The joy-filled event was “huat” a family gathering should be. Every guest went home with joyful memories and a goodie bag filled with daily necessities such as brown rice, low sodium salt, Nestum wholegrain beverage, Milo and instant noodles.
“May your body stay strong and healthy!” uncles and aunties!
