Essential Skills for Effective Mentoring

Young SMOU recognises the power of mentorship in fostering growth and developing the next generation of maritime professionals. For that reason, YSMOU organised a mentorship introductory workshop on 15 August 2024, to prepare our youth members comprising of active seafarers and former seafarers, before they take on the role as a mentor.

The mentoring workshop led by training partner, Bold at Work, guided YSMOU members and alumni in discovering their potential as mentors through self-assessment, identifying their preferred mentoring styles, and learning how to build successful mentoring relationships.

Through interactive mentor and mentee role plays, participants honed skills in navigating mentoring relationships, using all they had learnt about mentoring, counselling and coaching.

Participants were equipped with basic micro-counselling techniques and introduced to coaching framework for setting goals. They learnt the importance of open-mindedness and empathy to address deeper issues that a mentee might face.

In one of the role-play sessions, participants had to demonstrate how to approach a mentee struggling with feelings of isolation and harassment onboard a multi-cultural environment, and having doubts about his sailing career. The scenario which is not uncommon among seafarers offered practice opportunities, using different approaches. The trainer reminded participants to be mindful of their tone and use of words when supporting distressed mentees and to avoid harsh responses. Trainer also highlighted on the need for escalation protocols when handling severe mental distress and cautioned to maintain an unbiased approach to a mentee’s problem.

As the mentorship introductory workshop drew to a close, members reflected on their key takeaways and shared on the areas which they intend to focus on in their own journey as mentors.

For Shahnaz Abdul Wahab, SMOU member (8 years), he realised that the mentoring offers invaluable insights into the maritime industry, helping mentees understand its dynamics, set strategic career goals, and develop essential skills. A few takeaways included the importance of networking, building an effective mentor-mentee relationship and how to navigate through the industry’s challenges. The workshop equipped mentors with the tools and skills to better support mentees in making informed decisions, managing their careers proactively, and advancing within the maritime field.”

What really stood out most for SMOU member (8 years) Tan Fu Wei (pictured in left) was the  importance of listening with empathy and truly understanding one’s mentee. Fu Wei learnt that the best way to understand a mentee is by asking the right questions, which would nudge him in the direction towards finding resilience within and foster a deeper mentor-mentee relationship. About relationship dynamics, he realises that “being objective and maintaining a neutral stance is important so as not to push our personal bias and preferences on to the mentee who may be facing a completely different set of circumstances.”

Through the workshop, YSMOU is able to better prepare the group of prospective members to serve as future mentors as part of the mentorship initiative.
