Making a Difference on World Senior Citizen’s Day

World Senior Citizen’s Day is celebrated on 21 August each year.

As part of SMOU’s core values of ‘Caring and Sharing’ to contribute meaningfully to the community, Young SMOU (YSMOU) organised a visit to SMOU’s adopted home – Henderson Home – on World Senior Citizen’s Day 2020.

Volunteers from YSMOU prepared care packs containing daily necessities and meals for more than 160 beneficiaries. The visit to the Henderson Home was graced by special guest, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC Ms Joan Pereira. Joined by Ms Mary Liew, NTUC President and SMOU General Secretary, Capt Robin Foo, SMOU Immediate Past President & Chairman of Henderson Home Advisory Council, the NTUC Health representatives and YSMOU volunteers, everyone spared no effort to distribute care packs and meals to the beneficiaries.

“It was a delight to see the seniors full of energy and happiness. Wishing all my senior residents good health, peace and happiness always. ” said Ms Joan Pereira, Member of Parliament, Tanjong Pagar GRC.

SMOU also presented a 55” Smart TV and 15 Samsung Tablets to residents of the Henderson Sheltered Home, to help equip themselves with basic digital skills.

In conjunction of World Senior Citizen’s Day, SMOU also delivered cupcakes and bento sets to over 170 residents of NTUC Health Nursing Home (Jurong West).

“Our ‘Care and Share’ effort is one of the Union’s many ways of showing solidarity with the beneficiaries of the Henderson Home. It is very heartwarming to see the support from the youth volunteers. The gestures of kindness has really brightened the day of the elderlies, helping them feel a little less alone during these difficult times.” said Ms Mary Liew, NTUC President and SMOU General Secretary.

Thank you to our volunteers for their heartwarming contribution to the residents!

It was very heartwarming to see the smiles on the elderlies’ faces. From this volunteering experience I have learnt that no matter big or small, it is about the little actions that address the needs of the community. I look forward to participating in more volunteering projects organised by SMOU,” Siti Ainul Nellisa Binte Mohamad, YSMOU Volunteer.

“This is an excellent initiative by YSMOU.  Especially in these difficult times of COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical that we uplift the most vulnerable groups in our community and to keep their spirits high, all for a good cause. ” Thomas Lau, YSMOU Volunteer.
