The SMOU Mentorship programme, initiated by Young SMOU (YSMOU), aimed at supporting the development and welfare of seafarers.
On 25 July 2025, the Mentorship Orientation session kicked-off with YSMOU mentors and mentees from the Tripartite Maritime Training Award (TMTA), creating a meaningful evening of engagement and relationship-building. It marks the beginning of their mentorship journey, focusing on understanding personalities, setting expectations, and fostering supportive learning experiences.
The evening began with a networking dinner, creating a relaxed atmosphere for mentors and mentees to connect informally. During the meal, SMOU’s Membership team introduced the MySMOU mobile app—a digital one-stop platform designed to support seafarers with easy access to services and information, as well as shared about SMOU benefits.
After the dinner, the mentorship orientation session began with YSMOU Manager Sherry Tan sharing the objectives of the programme. A trainer from Bold at Work then led the workshop with engaging and interactive activities to help build connection and understanding between the mentors and mentees.
Beyond the interactive activities, mentees opened up about their hopes and aspirations for the mentorship journey. The session then transitioned into the respective groups, where mentors and mentees deepened their connections and began shaping their plans for the mentorship ahead.
YSMOU Mentorship programme plays an important role in the union’s efforts to strengthen the maritime community. It is a way to pass on knowledge, uplift one another, and nurture leadership for the future.
