Protecting and Powering the Next Generation

Starting a career at sea is an exciting milestone. Knowing your rights, understanding the support available, and having someone in your corner can make all the difference.

This was the core message at the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU)’s recent Union Awareness session, held on 1 September 2026 for around 25 Diploma in Nautical Studies (DNS) cadets and their families during Singapore Polytechnic’s Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) pre-sea departure briefing. SMOU thanks SMA for its support and for inviting the Union to engage with the cadets and their families.

Sherry Tan, SMOU Youth Division Manager, introduced the cadets to the union and its support network. She also shared insights on seafarers’ rights, welfare, and the support available throughout their careers at sea.

Attendees also learned about a wide range of educational, welfare, and social benefits. Through Young SMOU, young members can access networking events, professional development and mentoring workshops, and volunteering opportunities designed to help them build lasting connections, acquire new skills, and grow both personally and professionally.

The briefing wrapped up with an informal engagement with SMOU’s Youth Division representatives, where cadets and their families could ask questions, connect, and understand how the union can support them as they begin their careers at sea.

As the next generation of maritime professionals embarks on their seafaring journey, SMOU remains committed to ensuring that young seafarers are well prepared, well supported and empowered to thrive throughout their journey.
