More than bags of essentials changed hands that afternoon. There were warm smiles, heartfelt conversations and a powerful reminder that even the simplest acts of kindness can make someone feel seen, valued and cared for.
As part of SMOU’s 75th Anniversary Acts of Caring and Sharing initiative, Act 2: Care for Fishermen brought together SMOU, the International Lutheran Seafarers’ Mission (ILSM) and Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) to reach out to fishermen at the Seafarers’ Welfare Centre (SWC) in Jurong Fishery Port.
The outreach was made possible through the generosity of SMOU members, who donated pre-loved apparel and accessories during a donation drive held in April 2026. The items were thoughtfully sorted and packed, together with goodie bags filled with everyday necessities such as biscuits, instant noodles, soap and other essentials, before being delivered to the fishermen on 24 June 2026.
Leading the visit were SMOU Vice President Lim Teng Toon and SMOU Assistant Treasurer Tan Geh Ting, alongside SMOU staff, ILSM and MWC representatives. As the gifts were distributed and tea refreshments served, what stood out most was the genuine interaction between the volunteers and the fishermen. Conversations flowed naturally as stories were exchanged, friendships were formed and appreciation was shared across cultures and backgrounds.
The outreach benefited close to 55 fishermen from three Sin Hua Fong vessels. As they carried bags of gifts back to their vessels, they also took with them the knowledge that they were remembered, appreciated and supported by a community that cares for those who keep the maritime industry moving.
Every act of kindness leaves a lasting impact. Through SMOU 75 Act 2: Care for Fishermen, the Union not only shared essential items but also strengthened its commitment to caring for the maritime community. SMOU extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated, volunteered and supported the initiative. Together, your generosity has touched lives and demonstrated that compassion is at the heart of everything we do.
