At every CadetsPlus graduation, the maritime industry is presented with a promising group of future-ready seafarers.
SMOU had the privilege of hosting the much-anticipated and the first overseas Members’ Nite since COVID – SMOU Manila Nite and Wavelink CadetsPlus Graduation on 24 May 2023 at the Conrad Manila Hotel, Pasay City in Manila, Philippines. Some 500 esteemed guests from Associated Marine Officers’ and Seamen’s Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP), SMOU members, cadets and shipping company poured in for a night of celebration and congratulations.
There to show their support were Guest-of-Honour (GOH) Mr Hans Leo J Cacdac, Undersecretary for Foreign Employment and Welfare Services and Special Guest Dr Conrad Oca, AMOSUP President, accompanied by Mr Rahim Bin Jaffar, SMOU President, Ms Mary Liew, SMOU General Secretary, Mr Thomas Tay, Emeritus General Secretary and Mr Yong Soon Huat, SMOU Treasurer.
The event kickstarted with an inspiring opening address from SMOU GS Ms Mary Liew; followed by the speech from GOH Mr Hans Leo J Cacdac congratulating the graduates from the Philippines CadetsPlus Programme. The cadets were commended for stepping up to the plate rain or shine, crisis or no crisis, to get their job done.
The CadetsPlus Programme successfully concluded another run, with a graduation ceremony held for 111 Filipino cadets who were certified sea-ready.
Officials from SMOU, WMI and shipping employers resounded with rapturous cheers when Brother Yong Soon Huat presented special awards to cadets voted for being the Most Outstanding, Best Leadership, Best Academic, Best Attitude Towards Learning and Friend’s Favourite.
A cadet speech by Kerby Russel J Fernandez from NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA) stirred up memories among the cadets who had spent the past three weeks together at NYK-TDG Maritime Academy in Calamba, Laguna from 8 May to 24 May 2023.
The meaningful Wavelink CadetPlus graduation was enveloped by SMOU Manila Nite which featured fringe activities such as the photo wall, claw machines and coconut stations, powerful dance move performances by the cadets and game and song performances. Emcee Giselle Sanchez anchored the event with her fun stage presence and live band Highway 54 stirred up the crowd with a steady flow of popular Filipino songs.
A tantalising feast of local cuisine kept the crowd energised through the night. The top 10 lucky draw winners received prizes such as iPad Air, laptop, fridge, Samsung phones, headphone, television and nintendo. The lucky draw prizes were generously sponsored by Komaya Shipping Co. Pte Ltd; Concerto Singapore Pte Ltd; JShip Management Pte Ltd; Wallem Shipmanagement Singapore Pte Ltd; Pacific International Lines; MTM Ship Management Pte Ltd; Laurel Ship Management Pte Ltd; Alfa SM & Sinosinfil Maritime Inc; Eastaway Ship Management Pte Ltd; and Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd.
With all that celebration going on, the SMOU Manila Nite and Wavelink CadetsPlus Graduation is touted as the night to remember.
About CadetsPlus Programme
CadetsPlus Programme is organised by the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) & Wavelink Maritime Institute (WMI) to prepare seafaring students for future officer responsibilities. Supported by the Singapore Maritime Training Fund (SMTF), the programme aims to promote collective training, education, and upgrading of seafarers.
For three weeks, cadets undergo an intensive pre-boarding training to become better seafarers through the emphasis on communication and active conversation, soft skills and personal development, legislative requirement, safety and environmental protection and shipboard integration.
The equipping of skills and knowledge prepares cadets for the transition to work onboard ships and amongst a multinational crew. The enhanced CadetsPlus programme features more trainer contact hours and supplementary training via the Online Learning Management System (LMS). To ensure quality training and effectiveness of the programme, WMI also carries out a modular assessment for each learning module.
