SMOU Members and Families Explore Shanghai: A 4-Day Adventure

From March 9th to 12th, 2024, around 30 members of the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and their families embarked on a memorable journey to Shanghai, China. The four-day, three-night trip offered an exciting mix of cultural exploration, sightseeing, and bonding among members.

The group gathered at Changi Airport on the evening of March 8th for their red-eye flight to Shanghai. Despite the late hour, spirits were high as everyone eagerly anticipated the adventures ahead. Upon arrival in Shanghai, the group hit the ground running with a visit to the iconic Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Here, they were treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the city from various observation decks, providing a perfect introduction to the vibrant metropolis.

The first day continued with a visit to Tianzifang, an arts and crafts enclave developed from a renovated traditional residential area. Members and their families enjoyed strolling through the narrow alleys, discovering unique shops, galleries, and cafes that showcased the creativity and culture of Shanghai.

The subsequent day tours were filled with a blend of historical and modern attractions. The group explored XinTianDi, a lively, car-free district renowned for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options. A highlight of the trip was a visit to Zhujiajiao Water Town, often referred to as ‘Shanghai’s Venice.’ Here, members enjoyed the serene waterways, ancient bridges, and traditional architecture, offering a picturesque contrast to the bustling city.

The tour also included stops at The Bund, Shanghai’s famous waterfront promenade, and the Yuyuan Bazaar, also known as the ChenHuangMiao Market. At Yuyuan Bazaar, members had the opportunity to shop for souvenirs and sample local delicacies in a vibrant, traditional market setting.

Throughout the trip, SMOU members and their families bonded over shared experiences, making new memories and strengthening their community ties. The well-organized itinerary ensured that everyone had ample opportunity to explore, relax, and enjoy the diverse attractions that Shanghai has to offer.

As the group boarded their return flight to Singapore, the conversations were filled with reflections on their adventures and discussions about future trips. This journey to Shanghai not only offered a break from daily routines but also reinforced the spirit of unity and friendship among SMOU members and their families.
