YSMOU Youth Interest Group Takes on Stand-Up Paddling

The Youth Interest Group—a youth-led initiative supported by Young SMOU (YSMOU)—successfully held its inaugural event, an introduction to stand-up paddling, on 27 December 2024 at the NSRCC Sports Centre. Seventeen enthusiastic youths participated in the event, which aimed to strengthen bonds among young seafarers while building confidence and motivation. It also provided an excellent opportunity to connect active young seafarers who are yet a member with the union..

Leading the event was Sister Nur Fadhiilah, a dedicated YSMOU  Committee member, who embraced the role of guiding her peers through this exciting new experience. The day began with a safety briefing and an introduction to basic paddling techniques conducted by a professional trainer. With safety tips in mind and paddles in hand, the youths ventured out to the sea to put their newly acquired skills to the test.

The activity challenged participants to step out of their comfort zones, fostering a spirit of teamwork and camaraderie. Whether balancing on the boards or navigating the waters, the youths demonstrated resilience and mutual support. They encouraged one another, showcasing the importance of unity and determination in overcoming obstacles.

After their paddling adventure, the group headed to the Lighthouse Bistro for lunch. This allowed participants to further engage with one another, sharing stories and strengthening connections built during the activity.

The event provided a fun, active experience while reinforcing teamwork and a sense of community. By fostering such initiatives, SMOU is dedicated to grooming the next generation of maritime professionals, nurturing leadership and promoting a culture of collaboration and support among young seafarers.

The Youth Interest Group's first event, stand-up paddle boarding, was a unique platform provided by YSMOU. It wasn’t just about trying something new; it was about creating shared memories, building trust, and fostering a sense of belonging among young seafarers. This activity brought us closer together and reminded us of the importance of teamwork and mutual support.

The event was an enjoyable one, as we had managed to bond over an activity that not many of us had experienced. It was refreshing to see many familiar faces and happy to connect with many others in the same industry. With the waves crest and trough, standing up and maintaining balance wasn't easy, we manage to encourage each other to stand up even though we kept falling. It was a day full of laughter and encouragement !
