Kopi Talk with Local Seafarers

Over drinks, food, and candid conversation, our SMOU Youth Division connected with the next generation of seafarers at a Kopi Talk session held on 21 January 2026. The session brought together 11 local seafarers who are currently preparing for their Certificate of Competency (CoC) Class 3 at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA).

Designed as an informal outreach, the Kopi Talk created a safe and welcoming space for cadets to share their experiences and challenges. Union representatives took the opportunity to check in on the cadets’ well-being, listen to their stories, and engage in honest conversations about life at sea and sharing their career goals after CoC Class 3.

The cadets spoke openly about their cadetship journeys. In response, union representatives shared insights, encouragement, and practical guidance drawn from their own maritime experiences.

The session also served as a platform to highlight how the union supports seafarers at different stages of their careers. Participants were introduced to the range of educational, social, and welfare benefits available to members, as well as upcoming programmes and initiatives planned in conjunction with SMOU’s 75th anniversary.

By the end of the session, cadets walked away with a clearer understanding of the union’s role and the support network available to them as they navigate their seafaring journeys. The Kopi Talk reaffirmed SMOU’s commitment to standing alongside local seafarers and nurturing a close-knit maritime community built on solidarity, care, and mutual support.

About SMOU Kopi Talk

SMOU Kopi Talk is a relaxed, informal session where seafarers come together to share their experiences, stories, and thoughts in a comfortable setting, much like uncles and aunties chatting over kopi at the coffeeshop. It is a space for open conversation, mutual learning, and genuine connection, away from formal talks or structured programmes.
