For 75 years, SMOU has been more than a union. It has been a community that brings maritime professionals together through shared experiences, mutual support and a common commitment to the industry.
That spirit was on full display from 15 to 17 March 2026, when approximately 400 members, families, cadets, industry partners and beneficiaries came together aboard the Genting Dream for the SMOU 75th Anniversary Mega Cruise.
While the occasion marked an important milestone in SMOU’s history, it was also an opportunity to celebrate the people at the heart of the union. Across three days, members reconnected with friends, strengthened bonds with fellow seafarers and spent quality time with their families in a setting that reflected their shared connection to the maritime industry.
The cruise blended celebration with learning and engagement. TMTA cadets gained firsthand exposure to shipboard operations through familiarisation sessions and guided tours, while industry stakeholders gathered at the C.U.R.E. Forum to exchange perspectives on the future of maritime industrial relations. The discussions served as a timely reminder of the importance of tripartism, trust and collaboration as the industry navigates an increasingly dynamic environment.
The voyage also reflected SMOU’s enduring commitment to Caring and Sharing. Beneficiaries from Henderson Home and Jalan Kayu joined the cruise, sharing in the experience and reinforcing the belief that meaningful celebrations are best enjoyed together with the wider community.
One of the highlights of the cruise was the anniversary dinner, where members and guests came together to commemorate SMOU’s diamond jubilee. Amid the laughter, entertainment and celebrations, the evening was a reminder of how far the union has come since its founding in 1951 and the many individuals who have contributed to its journey over the decades.
As the cruise drew to a close, it became clear that the occasion was about more than marking 75 years of history. It was a celebration of the friendships, partnerships and shared values that continue to strengthen the SMOU family today.
Looking ahead, those same values will remain at the heart of SMOU’s journey as it continues serving maritime professionals and supporting the next generation of seafarers in the years to come. |
